These are the 3-keys to daily well being that will improve your life

These are the 3-keys to daily well being that will improve your lifeThese are the 3-keys to daily well being that will improve your lifeTom Rathis a researcher, author, and filmmaker who studies the role of human behavior in business, health, and well-being. The bestselling author ofAre You Fully Charged?andStrengths Based Leadership, hes also a senior scientist and advisor to Gallup. Since age 16, hes been successfully battlinga rare diseasethat causes cancer cells to appear throughout his body.He joinedSusan Cain,New York Timesbestsellingauthor ofQuiet, for a conversation on the secrets to living ahealthy, happy, and meaningful life.SusanAt only age 39, youve lived a pretty extraordinary life. And youre well known for your natural humility. How do you channel all that quiet modesty into your work?Tom One of the lessons I learned very early in life, from my grandfather, is that it is an extraordinary waste of time to try to be someone you are elend. So while I aspire to have a positi ve influence on other people, I know Im notlage going to accomplish that by being the loudest or most charismatic person in a room. What I can do is read, learn, and listen as much as humanly possible and channel my findings into something productive. This is the part that comes naturally to me.My challenge is that all the knowledge in the world does little good for others until it is shared in a practical form. This is why I have spent quite a bit of time trying to become a semi-competent writer over the past decade. There is so much amazing research being conducted today that could influence peoples lives. But that knowledge has to meet people at a time of need in order to have any chance of influencing a persons daily choices.Susan At age 16, you were diagnosed withVHL disease, a rare genetic disorder that causes cancer cells to appear in various parts of your body. Since that time, youve been researching and experimenting with various ways of slowing down the growth of those tum ors. What have your most important findings been?Tom An essential learning for me is that anyone can dramatically improve their odds of living a long and healthy life by making better choices. Just look at the physical aspects. If you get a good nights sleep tonight, it gives you a clean slate for tomorrow, where you are mora likely to be active throughout the day and make better food choices. Perhaps most importantly, this starts an upward spiral, where you feel progressively better as each day goes by.TrendingHow to Want What Youve Got in a World of Infinite ChoiceThe broader learning for me, after battling cancer for a couple of decades, isyou have to do something today that will continue to grow after youre gone. I may have a mora constant threat to my mortality than the average person, but in reality the only thing any of us can count on with extreme certainty is that we have today to do what matters most. When I orient my days around this simple thought, it makes it easy to sp end even more time doing things for other people each day.SusanWhat do you do when you feel scared or anxious?Tom It helps me to simply acknowledge the fact that I am feeling anxious. In most cases, this keeps my physiological response in check so it does not exacerbate the problem. I think a majority of things we allow to create anxiety in our lives are a reflection of how we choose to respond to external circumstances. Another thing that helps me is focusing on everything thatisgoing right. Simply bringing the thought of my childrens laughter to mind induces a smile almost instantaneously. When I am anxious as a result of larger stressors, I tend to tackle the problem right away. Life is too brief to let fears- that are often unfounded- erode entire days or weeks. Especially for someone like me who needs a lot of thought time, it would be easy to let fears consume far more bandwidth than they should.SusanIn recent years, and especially in your latest bookAre You Fully Charged?, you r focus shifted to daily well-being. Why that shift?Tom Looking at what improves well-being in the moment is infinitely more practical. In the past, most research focused on asking people to reflect on their lives overall. That is like inquiring about the quality of someones career by asking them to read their resume. It misses almost all of the richness and emotion that occurs in the thick of a typical day. This is why Ive been deeply encouraged by a lot of smart research around daily well-being or what researchers call daily experience. When you look at what really matters on a moment-to-moment basis, it is things like brief interactions with loved ones that matter significantly more than how much money we make or whether we live in a wealthy country.SusanWhatarethe three keys to daily well-being?TomThe first key isdoing some type of meaningful work today. The second keyis having far more positive than negative interactions. The thirdkey is having the energy you need to be your best today, which starts with eating, moving, and sleeping well in combination.SusanWhat are the essentials of meaningful work? And can most people, who are already overwhelmed with paying the bills and supporting their families, afford to think in these terms?Tom Its important to note that I am defining meaningful work as doing something that benefits another person. If you think about it in terms that are this basic, even small acts that have a little positive value for society count. In this context, I would argue that meaningful work is more of a basic necessity than a luxury for those who can afford it.Meaningful work is also a lot more practical than I ever thought before I did a deeper dive on this topic. I had always assumed things like meaning, mission, and purpose were higher level needs, but the more I learn, the clearer it becomes that meaningful work is a basic human need that cuts across professions and income levels.SusanYou write about the importance of positive social in teractions. What does this mean for introverts, who often prefer their social time in smaller doses, with closer friends, and punctuated by solitude?Tom There is nothing more appealing to this introvert than a combination of solitude and a little time with my closest friends. Perhaps this is why the research around ratios of positive to negative interactions has always resonated with me. The quality of social interactions matters far more than the frequency of those interactions. Based on what I have studied, we need about 80% of our interactions with other people to be more positive than negative. This is simply because negative interactions carry much heavier load and outweigh positive ones.I have also learned to leverage my more analytical and inquisitive personality to create better interactions. It is a lot easier for me as an introvert to ask a good question than it is to initiate a story or other banter. So I ask a lot of questions, listen well, keep my electronic devices sto wed away, and learn as much as I can during each interaction. In a world where attention is so incredibly fragmented by voices and devices, I have a feeling that some of these things introverts naturally do better will be even more highly valued in the future. This article originally appeared on Heleo.

Boatswains Mate - Navy Enlisted Rating Description

Boatswains Mate - Navy Enlisted Rating DescriptionBoatswains Mate - Navy Enlisted Rating DescriptionThe Navys Boatswains Mate rating (which is what the Navy calls its jobs) is one of the two oldest in this branch of the military, dating back to 1794. This rating, which has Navy Occupational Specialty code number B400 allows new recruits to enlist without a specific career path identified. Its often used by some enlisted personnel who havent decided which career to pursue (think of it as a college freshman whose major is still undecided), and by others who want a certain rating that may not be available at the time they enlist. Duties Performed by Boatswains Mates Boatswains mates train, direct and supervise personnel in ships maintenance duties in all activities relating to marlinspike (a tool used to help tie large knots), deck, boat seamanship painting, upkeep of ships external structure, rigging, deck equipment and, of course, boats. Boatswains mates also operate and maintain equipment which may be used in a variety of areas aboard a ship, including loading and unloading cargo, ammunition, fuel and general stores. Since this rating is kind of an all-purpose position, the duties are variedand tend to cover work not assigned to other ratings. Boatswains mates may serve as helmsmen and lookouts, or stand as security watches (both in port and at sea), or serve as part of a damage control, emergency or security alert team. Their duties may also include repairing, maintaining and stowing equipment in preparation for underway operationsdoing temporary duty for 90-120 days with food services divisions or compartment cleaning working in non-engineering divisions of the ship or station or participating in naval ceremonies. Working Environment for Boatswains Mates After successful completion of recruit training, boatswains mates are usually assigned to shipboard duties where the Navy needs them the most. Boatswains mates can request and may receive on-the-job t raining for a rating that they are interested in, qualified for and whichis available at their first command by completing correspondence courses and personal advancement requirements. They must also be recommended by their commanding officer for the Navy rating they desire. Although this rating may seem like a jack-of-all-trades job with wildly varied duties, the Navy describes boatswains mates as the backbone of every ships crew. Technical School Training for Boatswains Mates After completion of recruit training, enlistees in the Seaman Apprenticeship Training Program attendsix weeks of training at boatswains mate class A school in Great Lakes, Illinois. Boatswains mates may also attend Navy schools to learn about general damage control, shipboard firefighting, preventive maintenance of special equipment and special tools used in the rating they are working in or seeking. How to Prepare for New Job Orientation

How to Prepare for New Job OrientationHow to Prepare for New Job OrientationSo you landed the job - now what? Many employers require that new employees go through an orientation process to assimilate into the workplace and become familiar with whats expected of them, now that theyre hired. Heres more on what you need to know about new job orientations, as well as how to prepare. The Purpose of a Job Orientation Think of your job orientation as part-introduction, part-training session, and part-tour. Your supervisor will familiarize you with the workplace, the company culture, and even your co-workers. Your job orientation is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, and to learn as much as you can about whats expected of you at your new job. The orientation may take place prior to you starting employment, or you could spend the beginning of your tenure at the job participating in an orientation program. Before you go, take the time to review the things youll need to do to get ready to start your job on the right foot. What to Expect at a Job Orientation When you attend an orientation for a new job, expect to meet a lot of people and be ready to absorb a lot of information. Your employer will likely brief you on the day-to-day procedures - such as clocking in and clocking out, where to put your belongings, what to wear - as well as explain your responsibilities and tasks, and introduce you to people who youll be working with. Youll also be informed about your salary, benefits, and expected hours. Depending on the size of the company and the number of new hires, you may be part of a group orientation or it may be just you. The orientation may be formal with scheduled sessions held on one or several days, or it could be more casual without a pre-set agenda. Inevitably, a lot of questions will come up as you are presented with so much new information. While its important to be an active listener, dont be afraid to bring up any questions or concerns - bu t do so tactfully, without interrupting the entire orientation process. How to Prepare for a New Job Orientation Although you shouldnt stress too much over a new job orientation - after all, your employer is well aware that its your very first day - there are steps you can take to ensure the process goes smoothly. Here are tips for attending a new job orientation Call Ahead It doesnt hurt to give your employer a ring a few days before the orientation and ask if theres anything specific you need to bring or anything you need to know in advance. For example, some companies request that you review the employee handbook prior to your orientation - and if youre given any materials in advance, be sure to take them seriously. That way, there wont be any surprises on orientation day. Dress Appropriately Unless you were given detailed dressing instructions, look professional and polished, and dress at the same level of formality that you did at your interview. If you expect to be on your feet the entire day, make it a priority to wear comfortable shoes. If youre not sure what to wear, ask the person who scheduled your orientation for advice. Arrive Early Remember you need to account for time to find the location, park, and check in with your supervisor. The last thing you want to be is late on the first day Bring a Notebook and a Pen Theres no way you can remember everything youve learned on the first day, and although you might not have the opportunity to jot notes down, its nice to have the resources on hand in case theres anything crucial you need to remember. It can also be useful to write down questions to ask at the end of the orientation, instead of interrupting in the middle of the process. Have Your Personal Information on Hand You may be required to fill out a W4 tax form, in which case youll need to know your Social Security number as well as your relevant tax details. Make sure you bring a copy of this information if you dont know it off the top of your head. It can also be useful to bring your banking information (bank account and routing numbers) in so you can set up direct deposit for your paycheck if you desire. Bring a Snack You might have a long day ahead of you, and theres no guarantee that food and water will be provided. To avoid feeling burnt out by mid-day, bring something to snack on, as well as a drink to keep you hydrated. That way, youll avoid the crankiness that comes along with hunger pains, and youll fly through your orientation and be ready for the first day on your new job Inquire About Whats Next Impress your employer by taking the initiative and asking whats next. For example, will you have a formal job training? Will there be further orientation sessions? Or, will you start off as a regular employee the next time to come in? By having that information, youll be able to proceed with confidence as you assimilate into the workplace and become used to your new job. Once you get the sc oop on the next steps, you can prepare to make the best possible impression on your new co-workers.

If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construc tion site? This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h2 2. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership r oles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Tips for Dressing for Job Interview SuccessTips for Dressing for Job Interview SuccessAn interviewers first impression is often a lasting one, so the way you present yourself during an interview is important, and while some outfit no-nos are clear (always, always stay away from denim), some guidelines may be mora subtle. Read below to find out why your appearance mattersand get recommendations on appropriate attire during job interviews. Dress Your Best When Interviewing Does it make a difference how youdress for an interview? In many cases, it does. In a conservative business climate, appearances do matter. In other environments, it isnt as important. For example, attire for asummer job interviewor astartup job interviewwill be less formal, but it does make sense to dress your best for the interview, regardless of the dress code at the organization. If youre in doubt abouthow to dress for an interview, it is best to err on the side of conservatism. It is also much better to be o verdressed than underdressed (or undressed). If youre elend sure, check with the person who scheduled the interview and ask. According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, 55% of another persons perception of you is based on how you look. So while your outfit may seem like a shallow concern compared to your experience and ideas, what you wear makes a difference to how interviewers will assess you as a candidate. Zoller shared some tips on how to look your best, without necessarily spending a lot of money. Interview Questions to Ask Yourself before You Hire

Interview Questions to Ask Yurself before You HireInterview Questions to Ask Yourself before You HireInterview Questions to Ask Yourself before You Hire DeZubeWhen hiringa new employee, fruchtwein employers focus on interview questions for the candidate. But some experts recommend asking yourself a few questions first. The answers can help nearly any employer develop better interview questions, regardless of company size or industry. Why? Because unless you know your companys values, culture as well as the jobs tasks the less likely you are to make the right hire. Those three questions are1. What are the five biggest problems the new employee will have to solve?2. What traits are shared by the best (and worst) people whove done this job?3. Should the new hire match the current company culture or expand it?Heres a closer look at why these queries can help you generate better interview questions and better hiring results. What Are My Five Biggest Problems? The five biggest problems forma t helped the YMCA hire more than 100,000 camp counselors nationally. Its been used by In and Out Burgers, as well as companies seeking board members, entry-level accountants and call center employees, says Lou aar, author of The Essential Guide for Hiring Getting Hired and CEO of The Adler Group, an Orange County, California, training and performance-based Hiring(SM) consulting firm.Adler developed the five biggest problems strategy after he received a serendipitous call a few years back from a manufacturing client. The plant owner had a managerial candidate waiting in his office, but hadnt prepared for the interview. He asked Adler to quickly tell him the best interview questions to ask.Adler suggested he walk the applicant through the plant, stop at every problem area he passed, and ask two questions1. If you were to get this job, how would you solve the problem? The candidates response shows whether they understand and could solve the plants biggest problems.2. Have you ever solv ed anything similar to this problem? This questionreveals whether the job applicant had applied his solutions in the real world. Nearly everyone can envision a solution to a problem, even an entry-level person, Adler says. But if they havent done anything reasonably similar, it adds risk to the hiring.Take some time to think about your companys biggest problems and whether your next hire will be tasked with solving them. What Traits Are Shared By The Best (And Worst) People Whove Done This Job?Before you begin the hiring process, think about the employees whove held the position in the pas. Then list the traits shared by successful workers as well as the traits of those who failed, says Mark Murphy, author of Hiring for Attitude and CEO of Leadership IQ, Marietta, Georgia. For example, Murphy once worked with a small engineering firm owner who thought being smart was the fruchtwein critical trait in the engineers he hired. When asked to paint a picture of someone who failed, the owner described an engineer who was smart, but arrogant, and often told customers they were wrong and he was right. The most successful engineer remained calm no matter how upset customers got, was caring and objective, and didnt take criticism personally. After making a list of these traits, a pattern was clear. Hed been hiring people that didnt work out because they were so focused on how smart they were and how dumb everyone else was that they failed, Murphy explained.Comparing past employees characteristics in this way will generate a list of must-haves (and must-not-haves), including characteristics to consider when writing job interview questions, Murphy says.In the case of the engineering firm, the owner asked behavioral interview questions aimed at uncovering negative, critical attitudes, such as Tell me about the most difficult customer youve dealt with? How do your skills compare to the rest of the people on your current team? Can you tell me about the weakest colleague on your l ast team?Do I want the new hire to match the current company culture or expand it?The third question worth asking yourself before your next hiring decision is whether the new employee should align with the company culture or be someone whos different enough to take the company culture in a new direction, says R. Wendell Williams, Ph.D., managing director of ScientificSelection.com, Jacksonville, Florida. One way to think about company culture is to ask What characteristics are most valued in my workplace? For instance, if your company is a startup, you may reward innovative thinking and agility. In contrast, a family-owned business might prize good teamwork and comradery. Before hiring outside of the culture, consider carefully whether someone whos radically different from the current staff will work out in the long term.I worked for a utility a long time ago and they were extraordinarily conservative, Williams said. They said they wanted to be entrepreneurial but they really didnt.A line manager might think he wants to hire someone who is off-the-charts entrepreneurial, but in fact hed be better off with someone whos just slightly more entrepreneurial than he is.To evaluate your owncompany culture, ask yourself these questions about your company How do we handle conflict or differing opinions? What employee accomplishments do we formally recognize? What behaviors do we reward monetarily versus those that generate promotions? What traits do we value in our employees? Such traitsmight include innovation, respect for authority, customer service, efficiency and speed, etc.Once youve identified your cultures traits, your interview questions can dig deeper into those traits What processes did you change at your last position? When you disagreed with your supervisor, how did you approach the situation? How does your average call time compare to the companys average call time?Taking the time to interview yourself before you hire will give you clarity about the next posi tion you need to fill as well as future hires. Are you looking to hire someone who will enhance your organizational diversity and align with your company culture? Learn to use behavioral interviews to build team diversity.
